As Thanksgiving draws near, our community in Sarasota draws together to help those in need of food. The majority of the people who live in Sarasota don’t have to worry about where there next meal is coming from.
We all see and hear the Salvation Army bell ringing outside of our local Publix supermarket. We reach into our pockets and give our spare change and it helps people.
Thanksgiving is a particularly American holiday. The word evokes images of football, family reunions, roasted turkey with stuffing, pumpkin pie and of course, the Pilgrims and Wampanoag, the acknowledged founders of the feast.
Thanksgiving is a day when we all need to remember what our forefathers went through, when they survived their first winter, fresh off the Mayflower ship. Cold, hungry and not a lot of decent shelter. By the grace of God, if you are reading this, we hope that this is not your situation. Thanksgiving is a day, we as a community should practice every day. In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast which now is remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving” – although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time, the festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guest arrived bearing five deer.
We find out every time, that giving to those in need, is much more rewarding than receiving. If you have never tried it, we encourage you to engage in this practice of giving back, however you find possible. It may make you more grateful for the things you do have.
