The faucet handle in your shower that controls hot and cold water coming out of your shower head, has been a popular complaint lately.  Customers call up our office and say that when they turn the faucet handle to hot, it does not get hot.  Is this happening to you?

Leak On Floor When Bathroom Sink Runs

Water on the bathroom floor or on the floor of the wall behind the bathroom, maybe the kitchen?  We had this happen to a good customer the other day.  They had just gotten back into town and turned on their bathroom sink faucet.  The husband noticed water on the floor coming out from under the refrigerator.  They had just gotten a new refrigerator and thought maybe the ice maker line connection was leaking.  He pulled the refrigerator out and checked the ice maker line, that was fine.   But there was still water on the floor.  That’s when he called a professional.  Wimpy’s Plumbing & Air, sprang into action and within a hour of the phone call, we were at the home in Sarasota with the plumbing problem, investigating the cause of the water on the floor.

When we arrived we found that the original plumbing waste line serving the lavatory, had finally worn out.

After cutting the mud tiled wall, behind the vanity using our Hilti Dustless Technology cutting equipment to eliminate all the dust from cutting concrete, we were able to show our customer the problem (“See in Action“).  The original inspection tag was still on the copper lavatory waste arm that was leaking from the holes in it. The tag was dated February 2, 1955!  How’s that for getting some life out of your plumbing system!

Having been in the Plumbing business in Sarasota for over forty three years, we thought we had heard every description of plumbing problems from our customers.  Yet to the amazement of all of our licensed plumbers on staff, we had never heard a water closet problem being described as a sipping toilet!

Being service plumbers, we are always up for a new challenge, so all of us wanted to go fix the sipping toilet.  Just to see what the problem could be. Well we all drew straws and the longest straw was the one who got to go.   Low and behold, when our Sarasota Plumber arrived at the customers home to fix their plumbing problem in Bradenton,  we asked the customer to describe what her problem was.  Even though the customer explains their problem over the phone to Lori, our customer service representative, we as the professional need to hear it ourselves from the customer, so we can properly diagnosis the problem with all of the information.  Then being fully aware of the entire situation, we can determine the solution to the customers plumbing problem or problems.

Our customer with the sipping toilet, took us upstairs and showed us her toilet.  Sure enough, the only way she knew how to describe it, was calling what it was doing, “sipping”.

It turns out our customer loves to keep her house, including her plumbing fixtures, very clean, tidy and orderly.  Turns out to keep her toilet bowl sparkling clean, she was putting three inch swimming pool tabs in her toilet tank.  Now I could not argue with her that the swimming pool tabs were doing a remarkable job keeping her toilet bowl sparkling.  However, the chlorine tabs that she was putting in the toilet tank, were destroying all the rubber, brass and steel parts and deforming the plastic parts inside her toilet tank.  This caused her toilet to constantly run.  Thus, the description in her words, the toilet was sipping!

Since her toilet looked good and she said it was flushing fine and she did not want a new toilet, we replaced all the parts in her toilet and removed the chlorine tab.

Toilets, The Good, The Bad , The Ugly.

Toilets, the good, the bad, the ugly.  Years ago, there was a television commercial about tires.  A man named Stanley, would yell out, tires ain’t pretty, to get you to come to his tire store to buy tires.  Some toilets aren’t pretty either.  Toilets are a necessity, but why can’t they be modern looking and flush well too?

I was vacationing with my wife this summer and since toilets are a necessity, we were using the ones in the house we had rented.  Wow, these toilets were not pretty, nor did they flush well.  Not to mention they were water hogs.  Being a Plumbing Contractor in the Sarasota/ Bradenton area, I see a large variety of toilets.  As I flushed the toilets in this house, I first noticed that the handle squeaked when I pushed it.  Second, the toilet sounded like a dying man sucking air for his last breath.  Then it just kinda swirled around and around using a bunch of water.  I had to stand there and wonder if I was going to have to mop up water, if and when, this toilet overflowed.  Also, it was a round front bowl toilet.  For men, the elongated bowl of a toilet is a much better solution.  Also with comfort height toilets readily available, these toilets seemed and were very antiquated.
